How to Convert Non-HomeKit Devices into HomeKit-Compatible Devices Using Home Assistant?

Last updated 8 months ago

Many Apple users want to add their connected home devices to the Apple Home app for easier control on their iPhones. This allows for convenient operation through Siri or quick access via the Control Center by swiping down from the top of the phone. Here's how you can use Home Assistant to convert non-HomeKit devices into HomeKit-supported devices.

1)Add device to Home Assistant by using integration or HACS integration

2) Go to Settings - Devices & Services - "+ ADD INTGRATION" - HomeKit Bridge

3) Select the entity types you want to add to the HomeKit Bridge. Click "Submit"

*Please note:you can choose to select all entity types, which will add all these devices to the Apple Home app. Alternatively, you can select specific entity types that you wish to add to the Apple Home app. Keep in mind that only entities successfully added to Home Assistant will appear later in the Apple Home app.

4) After successfully adding the HomeKit Bridge, it will appear in the integration list. Click on the left sidebar, and you will find the HomeKit Bridge QR code.

5) Using an iPhone / iPad, open the Apple Home app. After setting up your home, tap the "+" in the top right corner and select "Add or Scan Accessory." Point the camera at the QR code displayed in Home Assistant and scan to add the device.

Note

1)Each QR code can only be scanned and added once. After successful addition, the QR code will disappear in Home Assistant Notification. If you need to share the device with other family members, there are two options:

  • Create a new HomeKit Bridge in Home Assistant, then repeat the process to add the device.

  • Use the Family Sharing feature within the Apple system to share the device with family members.

2)Sometimes, after successfully scanning the QR code and clicking "Add," the app may get stuck in a waiting state. There are two possible reasons for this:

  • No devices of the selected entity types have been added to Home Assistant. You need to add the devices to Home Assistant first, then create a new HomeKit Bridge.

  • An issue occurred when creating the HomeKit Bridge in Home Assistant. In this case, delete the HomeKit Bridge and recreate it.
